About Passter
The need for security, the crisis and rationale behind this solution
I've been working for the last five years in a big American software company (as a software engineer in a security project).
During this time I haven't paid too much attention to the my websites passwords. I had some doubts while considering a software to remember my passwords. Those software are hard to work with, they usually have no ability to sync between computers, I can't trust their online servers, I have no control on my passwords, and no control on which information is sent and to where.
During this time I've written passwords in plain text files at my home computer. Synchronization between my work computer and my home computer was not optional this way. Any other device like my iPhone was also lacking of easy password management.
Then there was a huge hackers attack on several popular websites, and hackers tried (successfully) to get the users and the passwords from many of them. specifically websites that used e-mail as a user name.
Unlucky me, my e-mail has shown up in those hackers list. The damage was first detected by PayPal (they do have great security infrastructure), then I wanted to see how the hackers gained access to my Paypal account.
The path was short: Pizza Hut (which sent me a mail explaining their customers data was stolen) used my e-mail as user name, then i've seen that the same password was used as my Hotmail account (big mistake). From there they used Hotmail to get access to PayPal, and that's the behind the scene story.
I've decided to take action and to create the ultimate safest password manager that will keep my encrypted passwords close to me (browser or gmail), and to have best practice security policies. Changing passwords frequently and alerting me on non strong passwords usage in websites.
Now that Passter has matured, everyone is welcomed to use it and have a safer websites experiance.
